Gilby Clarke’s 1965 Panhead
Gilby Clarke is a Hollywood rock guitarist with custom Harleys in his blood. The American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer is best known for a three-year tenure as the rhythm guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, replacing Izzy Stradlin in 1991 during the Use Your Illusion Tour. While a member of the band, Gilby was a recipient of the MTV Video Vanguard Award. When the Guns machine imploded at the behest of Axl Rose, Gilby hit out on his own armed with a Les Paul and a handful of songs.
Following his departure from the group, Gilby went on to forge a solo career as both a studio rock guitarist and touring guitarist with Slash’s Snakepit and Kat Men, he joined the Wilson sisters of Heart, Nancy Sinatra, Kathy Valentine (of The Go-Go’s), MC5, and he formed his own group Rock Star Supernova with members of Metallica and Mötley Crüe.
These days, when Gilby is not on tour performing or in the studio recording, he’s at home in Sherman Oaks, California, with his lovey wife Daniella Clarke of 27 years. His passion, along with music, is custom Harleys, and as you can guess he has quite a collection. And when Gilby’s not out riding on the weekends with Daniella, or attending bike events like Sturgis, he’s at home in the garage taking care of his bikes, which include a Jesse James/West Coast Choppers high roller and a Russell Mitchell/Exile Cycles bar hopper.
His favorite bike, however, is this classic Panhead Hardtail Springer, which was a featured Hot Bike magazine cover machine some 20 years ago before Gilby bought it. Once he brought it home, it was stripped down to the bare frame where he then rebuilt it more to his own taste with the blue flame paint and old-school touches like the rear fender sissy bar he fabricated himself.

If you ever see this bike at some SoCal bike event or parked under the big shade tree at The Rock Store in Agoura, California, look around for the longhaired rocker hiding behind sunglasses and that will be Gilby Clarke. This bike will also be featured in the FastDates.com Iron & Lace Custom Motorcycle Calendar with beautiful calendar kitten Alissa Bourne. HB
