The Real World
If you’ve never had the chance to throw a leg over a turbo bike, do yourself a favor and beg, borrow, or steal one from a friend. Turbo-aspirated bikes run like a 500-pound sleeping lion. When you want to just cruise around town, chill up and down the main street, or hit the open road and enjoy the scenery, a turbo motor purrs like a kitten and runs like any other bike. But when you want to bolt like an unleashed circus animal, all you have to do is twist that throttle and let the RPMs build some big power boost. At that point, you better be paying attention, because things start getting interesting … fast!
All that power is easy to make in theory, but is also easy to break if you don’t know what you’re doing. Trask Performance in Phoenix has the go-to guys when it comes making spinning huff-puff power. They specifically design turbo systems that are made for the street, but strong enough for the track. The flat black Road Glide belongs to Trask owner Nick Trask. He explains a little more about the street setup that was installed. “I wanted a dependable everyday rider. We decided to put our 103 Trask Turbo Spec engine and our intercooled tailgate standard system. This combination provides a smooth streetable 155 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque on pump gas. My bike was also built to show off the Trask V-line series of components. It looks good and is totally rideable. Why build a bike if you can’t ride it hard? A lot of guys forget this when trying to one-up the next guy. We make many levels of performance upgrades, but this combination is by far the best value for the money.”
The second Road Glide with the graphics belongs to Irvin Foster from Calgary, Canada. “Irvin approached us to build a him a custom Road Glide that would stand out in a crowd. He said the bike must have power, and it dyoned at 160 hp and 164 lb-ft of torque. He also wanted a bike that he could put 2,000 miles on at a time. His bike is amazing and has the best of both worlds. It rides great and has plenty of usable power.”
Turbo bikes can be big fun without a doubt. If properly set up, you get all the power of a big motor without all the unreliability and broken parts. Though once you get a taste for tsssst sound from the blow-off valve, you can bet you’ll be on the gas, more than off. At the very least it sure makes a short trip of long stretches of road and riding a lot more interesting. Throttle on.
