My Two Cents
I’ve always known how important riding gear is should I be involved in an accident. I crashed my friend’s dirt bike years ago, and I wasn’t even wearing a T-shirt! Lesson learned from that point on. I constantly remind myself in regards to going down, it’s not a matter of if, but when, hence I ride with gear every time I throw a leg over a bike, even for a quick trip to 7-11 down the street from my house. You never know when fate will rear its ugly head.
Recently, a friend of mine was out for a ride on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, cruising around the hills of Orange County, California, having a blast. While in a left-hand turn, he had a little more momentum than he was comfortable with, and some asshole in the next left-turn lane cut him off. My friend panicked and ended up running into a curb at almost a 45-degree angle at about 20 mph. Next thing he knew he was on the ground, trying to figure out what had just happened, how the hell it happened, what the next step was, and how pissed off he was at the jerk who cut him off! After looking at his shredded gloves and battered full-face helmet, he realized had he not been wearing those items, or if he was wearing his beanie helmet, he would have fared much, much worse. Who knows how mangled his hands and face would have been, but because he was properly geared, it wasn’t an issue.
It’s unfortunate that unforeseen events like these happen all the time. But it’s better to have a few scrapes on your bike (some might not think so) then to have a few large gashes on your face or hands thanks to some good riding gear.
Bye for now…
