Blue Steel | Custom 2003 Harley-Davidson Street Glide
I feel a little sorry for Rudy Alba’s poor Softail. I’ve never met the bike; I’m sure she’s a fine steed. Ever since Alba leapt laterally to a bagger, though, the Softy’s become a second filly in the herd: “Since I bought this bike I can honestly say I neglect my Softail.” You can almost hear pride in the way he says it. There’s nothing wrong with his other bike. His bagger is just that much cooler to him.
This project came into the world a stock Electra Glide Standard. Rudy wasn’t happy to leave it that way, obviously. “Standard” isn’t part of the custom-bike vocabulary. What he really wanted was something more Street Glide-y, only with a Tour-Pak and fairing lowers.
Alba’s battle plan called for keeping the motor and frame mostly as is and recreating the bike around them as a foundation. He wasn’t interested in a mammoth front wheel; cutting into the frame neck wasn’t necessary for adding the 21-inch DNA 60-spoker that now resides between the bagger forks. This bike being groomed as a daily commuter, reliability trumped extreme changes like huge wheels and drag motors. “Also, I installed Monroe Corvette shocks in the rear with an onboard compressor. It’s an affordable and reliable air ride that I thoroughly enjoy,” he told us.
Looks counted a lot though. Even when it came to the powerplant. Rudy chromed it out, keeping the stock guts mostly intact. Although he didn’t want a full-on drag motor, more midrange grunt was what he really wanted out of his Twin Cam. To that end, he went with an S&S gear drive, a K&N airbox, and Samson pipes.
Loud pipes might save lives, but it’s the loud music that makes those lives worth living. Rudy took care of the audio part of his happiness equation with six Rockford Fosgate and Pioneer speakers on his bagger. This sweet beauty being his daily commute bike, why shouldn’t he enjoy it as thoroughly as possible? “I call it my family mobile,” Rudy Alba said. “Occasionally though I like to ride my Softail to bike nights and local events, but as far as riding goes, nothing beats a bagger.”
Sorry, Softy. But, hey, don’t stop believing. Maybe he’ll come around. Or not.
