Motion Pro’s Harley-Davidson M8 Softail/Bagger Split Clutch Cable Upgrade

I know there are plenty of types of motorcycles that you can take straight off the showroom floor and experience peak performance with and not have to do any immediate upgrades and/or modifications. But I don’t ride any of those types, and as such, have accepted the fact that with any Harley-Davidson “cruiser”, in order to achieve higher levels of performance, upgrades/modifications will be necessary.
Whether it’s investing in high-end suspension and brakes, or replacing inefficient plastic parts for stronger, billet-aluminum upgrades, it’s all part of the price of admission I’m willing to pay! The latter of which has come up twice with the 2021 FXLRS clutch cable—first time around, when Danny “Motorwitch” Wilson installed the Evolution Industries clutch, he eliminated the upper half of the plastic auto adjuster with a billet replacement from Fat Baggers, Inc. (FBI) to avoid any future clutch failure.
Recently, Motion Pro introduced their new Split Cable kit for the ’18-up Softail and ’21-up Touring that eliminates the entire plastic assembly, as well as the auto adjust, with a full 6061 T-6 billet junction box that includes a manual adjuster and, as they call it, a “longitudinally wound” housing upper clutch cable in a number of lengths. And, it’s a simple half-hour (give or take, depending on your mechanical knowledge/skills) install.
V-Twin Now in Riverside, CA, ordered up an appropriate-length (41 inches to accommodate 14 inches of bar/riser height on top of OE clutch cable length) Motion Pro Split Cable kit and, after a filling breakfast downtown at Yoli’s Mexican Café, performed the quick-and-easy swap. One less weak spot on the Lowrider S to worry about now …
(Editor’s Note: The instructions supplied by Motion Pro are way more thorough and explanatory when it comes to the installation process—please refer to them for all technical and safety precautions!)

Motion Pro’s design features a more comprehensive and robust split clutch cable with significant improvements throughout to enhance reliability. The all-new junction box incorporates components machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum, eliminating the plastic parts found in the OE cable design. Additionally, a threaded cable adjuster at the junction allows for precise cable adjustments. The package also includes Motion Pro’s longitudinally wound cable housing, providing durability and compression resistance.
