Riding the 2023 Harley-Davidson CVOs
Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) have long been a go-to for consumers looking for the peace of mind of a factory-backed motorcycle with the bells and whistles of a custom. The Harley-Davidson CVO Touring motorcycles have always been a hot-ticket item too, and for 2023, there are some substantial updates to the CVO Road Glide and a CVO Street Glide. I was given the unique opportunity to ride Harley’s newest CVOs, and I can confidently say H-D is making huge strides in the right direction.
Design and Styling
We’ll start off with the obvious, because it’s evident that Harley-Davidson’s designers and engineers analyzed every detail–the MoCo went all out. I personally think the redesigned CVO Road Glide and CVO Street Glide offer a refreshing take on modern engineering while still retaining quintessential Harley DNA. From the prominent re-designed fairings on both the Road Glide and Street Glide to punchy new colorways, it’s clear that Harley-Davidson hasn’t forgotten its heritage while continuing to push the boundaries of modernizing its fleet. Not only did they give the new models a total facelift, but they also took a stab at revamping the collective tins entirely. They’ve shaved the sides of the fuel tanks giving the bike a sleeker look which allowed the body lines flow all the way to the rear where they’ve also shaved the bags which may or may not have been influenced by the “Performance Bagger” scene. With all that said, I’m sure we’ll see the new design migrate down the line to the non-CVO models and I’m all for it.
Performance and Power
The 2023 CVOs house the new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine, which generates a healthy amount of torque and horsepower, featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads, variable valve timing, a new intake tract, a higher compression ratio, and a freer-flowing exhaust system. The new 1977cc power plant produces 9.5% more horsepower and 8% more torque than its predecessor, boasting 139 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm and 115hp at 4500 rpm. The throttle response is crisp and the power is there when you need it, making the ride that much more enjoyable. Honestly, it doesn’t feel much different than the original air-cooled M8, which was released back in 2017. The most noticeable difference, however, is how smooth it feels under acceleration. This bike is a testament to the fact that Harley-Davidson knows how to create thrilling and healthy powertrains while still hanging on to that original Harley-Davidson feel.
Handling and Overall Ride Experience
The MoCo has made significant strides in enhancing the handling and maneuverability of the new CVOs, given they come equipped with new inverted 47mm Showa forks and premium shocks with 3 inches of suspension travel straight from the factory. The chassis is rigid and stable, much like the previous FLH models, providing confidence and control in various riding conditions–I had zero issues hitting the turns at 60-plus mph. Although the new suspension effectively soaks up bumps and imperfections, I think the biggest problem you’ll run into is the 30 degree lean angle on either side, it’s pretty limiting… But the aftermarket will inevitably take care of that issue. There’s no doubt the new CVO models are built for long-haul cruising, effortlessly devouring miles while still maintaining the comfort you’d expect in a bagger.
Technology and Features
Integrating modern technology while preserving an authentic riding experience has become a very important factor in the overall package, which I think the design and engineering folks at Harley-Davidson really seem to understand. The 2023 CVOs are equipped with a comprehensive suite of tech features. The large, high-resolution touchscreen infotainment system serves as the bike’s command center, offering navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, media controls, and more. The most significant change is the fact that the Harley decided to ditch the analog gauges and integrated them into the new 12.3-inch TFT display, which provides 400-percent greater screen area, giving you access to Android and Apple connectivity and other useful tools. Additionally, the bike is equipped with advanced rider aids like ABS, traction control, and multiple riding modes, enhancing safety and peace of mind. The new CVO’s give you access to five different ride modes, including two which are totally customizable. (I personally like to keep my bikes in Sport Mode).
Comfort and Ergonomics
Long rides on the 2023 CVO bike are a dream thanks the newly designed seat and well-positioned handlebars, especially on the Road Glide model. The adjustable windscreen suits various rider heights, effectively deflecting wind pressure, reducing fatigue during highway cruising and keeping the buffeting to a minimum.
Harley-Davidson’s 2023 CVO lineup is a huge upgrade in the world of motorcycles. It really highlights the Motor Company’s craftsmanship, blending heritage with cutting-edge technology and delivering an unmatched riding experience. The power of its Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine combined with its sophisticated handling and elaborate features make it even more enjoyable to ride. The 2023 CVO lineup is a testament to their dedication to crafting extraordinary bikes that push the boundaries of what’s possible on two wheels.
