First Ride: 2016 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim S
Harley-Davidson recently invited Hot Bike to ride it’s 2016 models in the Portland Area. This provided a great test bed of varying terrain and conditions to flog these new machines. One of the 2016 models we were highly anticipating to ride was the Softail Slim S. H-D listened to consumer suggestions and implemented some new features based on them. , most notably an upgraded power plant.
Big news for the 2016 Softail Slim S ( and Fatboy S) is the addition of the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110B engine ( formerly only available in CVO models) to the venerable platform. This created quite a buzz on our social media outlets when we posted some photos of the mighty power plant nestled in the Softail chassis. Everyone wanted to know one thing : “How is that motor?”
We’ll get right to it, the 110B engine and it’s 1801cc with 109 lb-ft toruqe delivers some serious rubber burning, arm tugging, ear to ear grinning thrust! It is fantastic for overtaking on the open highways and getting out of the way of traffic around town.We quite honestly couldn’t get enough of it!
The addition of an electronic cruise control, a first for softail models, with it’s intuitive single button control added an extra element of comfort on longer rips down the highway.

The Softail S features a stylish solo seat with a stitched in a tuck-and-roll pattern that was a cause of debate with everybody that set atop it. Seats are always a very subjective part of a motorcycle and this one was no different.I personally had no problem with it as I prefer firmer saddles and actually quite liked this one. Others hated it and their butts went numb.
The Softail S offers a smooth, predictable and plush ride but it’s suspension is a bit clunky and blows through it’s travel quickly when pushed. Ground clearance was another issue as scraping of the floorboards was a common occurrence in the most routine of corners. We altered our riding style a little bit then had no further problems although a suspension upgrade in the future would be a welcome addition to the Softail’s handling.
In conclusion, we absolutely love the addition of the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110B engine and are glad the brass in Milwaukee listened to the people. Well played H-D.
