Boom, Replace, Repeat | Custom 2008 Harley-Davidson Road Glide
Hot Bike: Tell us how this bike came into your shop.
Strictly Hawgs: The idea was brought up at the end of summer in 2014 when the motor was a 106 that I had built about three years ago. It was originally a stock 96. Bryan [the bike owner] messed the flywheel up in that motor. Bryan is a childhood friend of mine who is a lot like me. Bryan has seen my ideas and talent from the beginning as well as also being extremely detail oriented. Bryan trusts me with his bike is what I’m saying.
Our original idea was to put this bike back together stock. However, halfway through completing, Bryan changed his mind. He brought it to me after he messed it up the first time and wanted to go to 106 inches. So I took it to 106 inches. He ended up twisting the crank in it, and so I took it to a 113.
HB: Why does he keep breaking motors?
SH: He rides the hell out of it. He breaks them in with 500 miles, and I do the service on them, and then it’s just balls out from there on. When I turned it to a 106 he sent me pictures hours later and he was up in Ojai. He rides his bike hard—wheelies and everything.

HB: What did you do to make it a 113?
SH: It’s a 113 with Screamin’ Eagle flywheels, MVA heads, and barrels. We took the MVA heads and took them to Larry at Performance Technique. He put little bit bigger valves in there and basically welded the crank. Other than that it’s a real-deal Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle 113. It makes roughly 134 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. To be sure I have to look at the dyno sheet, but I know it makes well over 130 horsepower. If we are on the freeway and had to drop a gear from fourth to third and grabbed a handful of throttle, it would pull the wheel up no problem.
HB: What about the rest of the bike?
SH: If you just saw the bike going down the highway you would actually think it’s a stock bike with just paint on it. But the bike rides like you wouldn’t believe. At 110 miles per hour the bike just sits there and doesn’t move around. When I say reliable, I mean reliable. You can ride that bike anywhere.
HB: How did Bryan like it?
SH: Bryan and me used to argue. We have countless hours of going back and forth about everything. He’d get mad and walk out my shop. He’d come back two hours later and say, “I thought about it. Let’s put it together then.” Now, every time he brings it for service I ask him if he’s out there tearing up bike. I tell his girl, “Hey! Don’t let me tear up his motorcycle!” I finally built him a motor he could not break.
