Bikes have a way of uniting people with the city they grew up in. To anyone outside of Southern California, they think when someone says they’re from “Los Angeles” that it’s one giant city. In actuality, Los Angeles proper is only a small portion of the LA area. Simply by crossing the street, it’s possible to go from city to city without ever noticing.
Each area of LA has its own bike cultures, from the beaches to the high desert. Within the cities themselves, the bikes vary in style from night to day. Darrell Estrada, nicknamed Relly Rell, is from Compton, California, and is proud to call this 2007 Street Glide his own. Darrell explains how his bike came about: “I bought the bike brand new. A couple of years went by, and I wanted to get a nice paint job and hook it up right. I finally did about six months ago. I told the guy who painted the bike I wanted ‘Relly Rell’ and an ‘RR’ on the front of the bike to make it look like a Rolls-Royce sign.
I wanted ‘Relly Rell’ and an ‘RR’ on the front of the bike to make it look like a Rolls-Royce sign.
On the back of my Tour-Pak, I wanted a skull with a crown. He told me to send him a picture of my face with my hat on and he would surprise me with the picture. He put my face on there with the crown in gold leaf and me as a machine turning into a terminator. The bike is a machine and I’m a rider. So it’s a human being and a machine. So it was perfect.”
With the paint in check, it was time to add some extra custom touches to further distinguish the bike. “My tank cover was metal ground and then had candy paint put on it, which came out nice. We also did the neck covers and sidecovers, shifter pegs and passenger pegs, and headlight bezel. It really came together nice.”
The one thing that does look out of place is the dirty rag that’s tied to the bottom of the frame. Darrell explains its significance to the bike. “When I first got the bike, my buddy had a drag rag. I told him I wanted to get one of those. All the old-timers had them back in the day. In order to earn one, they had to go the Continental Divide. So I rode to New Mexico and did it in 12 hours straight. I stopped, had some coffee, had some donuts, turned around, and I was home the next day. After that I tied my rag around my frame.

It looks like a burned-up piece of wood or something. People are always yelling at me that I have something dragging. I told my buddy it was looking kind of dirty and I should get a new one. He told me to keep it and the weather will beat it up, and there will always be a memory there.”
Now that the bike is completed, Darrell is out there in the streets enjoying the Glide every chance he gets. “I very proud of what I did. I love to ride. I always wanted a Harley. A lot of guys in my club, The Kings of Cali, have nice bikes.

Now that I’m a part of it, I’m into it real deep right now. It’s a blessing from God. When the guy put the crown on top of my picture, a lot of people tell me that’s heavy right there. I’m loving the attention.”
