Simple Swap | Screamin’ Eagle Mufflers/ Air Cleaner Upgrade

01. The chrome with black, slotted end-capped Street Performance Staggered Dual Mufflers provide an edgier look, and a nice increase in horsepower and torque. The Stage I Air Cleaner Kit flows air to the engine more optimally. A one-piece cast backplate, air filter, breather, and hardware is included. The chrome Smooth Air Cleaner Cover features a cutaway design to work in conjunction with flowing more air to the Stage I Air Cleaner assembly.

02. The stock WG was rolled onto the lift ready for the installation.

03. Alan quickly removed the stock air cleaner cover and air cleaner assembly, and bolted on the new backplate and breathers to the cylinder heads (arrow). He then installed the new high-flow air filter to the backplate.

04. Once the air filter was tightened down, the Smooth Air Cleaner Cover was installed. Its round design pays homage to the Evo-style engines of yesteryear, and it also provides a bit more room for your right leg when riding.

05. Next up, Alan removed the stock mufflers. There are two tabs where the mufflers meet the head pipes that connect to a mounting bracket. Here Alan removed the upper tab (arrow), followed by the lower tab for the bottom muffler.

06. Once the stock mufflers were removed, Alan bolted up the Staggered Duals to the head pipes, and tightened them to the mounting bracket located on the left side of the trans cover, then the mufflers were bolted together near the rear shock. Lastly, Alan downloaded the Stage I ECM upgrade and installation was complete. A trip to HB Hogs & Choppers’ dyno was next.

07. A trip to HB Hogs & Choppers’ dyno was next. The stock run produced 66.4 hp and 84.7 lb-ft of torque. The new components yielded 73.7 hp and 88.3 lb-ft of torque, a gain of 7.3 hp and 3.6 lb-ft of torque. For $535.85, that’s pretty good value.
In the never-ending quest for more power, there are many options available. A noticeable addition can be had from a high-flow air cleaner upgrade, and high-performance slip-on muffler swap. That’s exactly what we were thinking for the ’10 Dyna Wide Glide (WG) in our test bike stable.
Harley-Davidson’s Screamin’ Eagle line features tried and true components for those hungry for more power. And its products won’t break the bank while giving you that added oomph to pass big rigs on two-laners without thinking twice.
The Street Performance Staggered Dual Mufflers ($349.95) fit ’08-later FXDF models, and ’10-later FXDWG models, and are available in chrome with black slotted end caps, black with chrome slotted end caps, or black with brushed nickel end caps. Brushed nickel or black head pipe heat shields are available to match. The mufflers are 50-state legal and claim to deliver a nice throaty tone and a bump up in the pony department. Since the WG features a chrome theme throughout, we chose the chrome with black end caps mufflers.
To go along with the mufflers, the Screamin’ Eagle Stage I Air Cleaner Kit ($139.95-$149.95) complements overall performance. The Stage I provides a freer breathing air filter and backplate that also claims a nice increase in power and torque. It’s model-specific and fits multiple Twin Cam applications. For this bike model, a new air cleaner cover was needed.
The Smooth Air Cleaner Cover ($45.95) is a round air cleaner cover reminiscent of the Evo-engine-powered Harleys. It’s available in chrome and features a unique cutaway design that flows air to the air cleaner more optimally. It fits ’99-later Twin Cams with Stage I Air Cleaner kits.
We headed over to our Harley-Davidson Fleet Center in Gardena, California, where Alan Barsi performed the muffler and air cleaner swap. After the components were installed, we took the bike for a spin on the dyno at HB Hogs & Choppers in Huntington Beach, California. HB
